Staying Connected

I liked this article about a teacher who used teleconferencing to keep in touch with her students during a trip to Washington D.C.

http://www.jdnews.com/news/koczot_63468___article.html/students_teacher.html

It made me wonder if many teachers think about ways to use technology to keep connected.

What really hit home was this quote from one of the students;
“It made me want to be interested in what is happening in the world"

I guess the first step in changing the world is getting students interested in the world.
Let me know what you think.

Mike

  1. I have several thoughts. Talking to the students before leaving for the show would have been useful in finding out what they wanted to know.
    Is this service of CNN Student News available to any school and what are the costs and technology requirements?

  2. In my research, it has been shown that synchronous contact with the visual and the auditory senses engaged increases the
    student's social sense and sense of immediacy (http://www.umanitoba.ca/learning_technologies/cetl/HETL.pdf). This reference
    is a really good one. Also, just considering learning styles it just makes sense to have some kind of video component in
    online learning (http://realaudio.rice.edu/ecot/ust/bied5336/session%20i/On-Line%20Learning.pdf). I like the way it was used
    here; it was a tool, not the whole gamut of online learning. It also was immediate in 2 ways; immediate news and immediate
    responses. Good job, Mike.

  3. What a timely story for me. I'm on spring break and have traveled from GA back to IL to see my family and friend. However, because I've enabled my students with email, a website, and Ed.Voicethread this year, several students are staying in contact and and academically engaged over the break. It's a good feeling to know that, given the opportunity, many of them want to stay engaged.
