What about those who feel our use of technology is making us stupid? Many in academia resist technology because they think it makes us lazy and unable to do simple tasks without it. Do they have a point or do they just mock things they don’t understand?
Here is an article about Dr. Mark Bauerlein, an English professor at Emory University, author of The Dumbest Generation: How the Digital Age Stupefies Young Americans and Jeopardizes Our Future (Or, Don’t Trust Anyone Under 30).

And another article by Alexz Fulco “Is Google making our generation 'stoopid?'”
Do you they have a point or just a resisting?
Let me know what you think.

Technology is neither good nor bad. It just is. However, some uses of technology can be deemed bad, or inappropriate, or simply, counter-productive. Using Facebook instead of listening to a professor's lecture is counter-productive when trying to learn what the professor is discussing. However there are times, many times probably, where listening to a professor lecture would be less efficient than interacting with/through technology when trying to learn something.
ReplyDeleteTechnology is simply a tool. It can be used for good or for ill.
Hi Josh,
ReplyDeleteDo you think something like "spell check" hurts or helps writing skills?
I'll weigh in--I don't think spell check or some of the calculator functions that we all use makes us stupid. This is work that is routine and easily solved by computers. Having them do the ordinary stupid stuff should free us up to spend more time being creative or at least enjoying ourselves.
ReplyDeleteI am an appallingly bad speller and would be lost without spell check. I've had it work three times while I wrote this (I'm also a lousy typist).
Thanks Nancy,
ReplyDeleteI don't know which I am worse at, spelling or typing, I just know that I need all the help I can get!
