Here is an idea.
Certiport Internet and Computing Core Certification (IC³) is view by many as the gold standard in computer literacy. This brochure covers the basics,

If this standard has been adopted as worldwide standard as something everyone should know about the Internet and computers, should this now become what our college faculty members should know at a minimum?
Here is a story about Taiwan adopting the standard as a nation,

Let me know what you think,

After checking out who endorses IC3(http://www.accessmylibrary.com/coms2/summary_0286-25319174_ITM), I think it will become a worldwide standard in basic computer literacy. I need to take this thing.
ReplyDeleteI tried to take the sample test (http://www.certiport.com/Portal/desktopdefault.aspx?page=common/pagelibrary/SampleExams_IC3demo.htm) but it is compatible with WinXP service pack 2 ,not Vista. I am running Vista on my quick machine. I want to take it when I can get to an XP machine.
While I do think that when it comes to educators skill/knowledge, PD is important in this area, I'm not sure I agree that enforcing standards when it comes to emerging technologies is the way to go. For one, the technologies are going to continue to evolve at an increasingly rapid rate such that knowing what to test and what proficient means is getting more and more difficult.
ReplyDeleteSuzon,
ReplyDeleteThe sample test is a really nice self help indicator. Does anyone else see the irony in the fact the sample test for computer literacy can’t be taken in Vista?
Josh they just updated the standard in 2008 from the one which was adopted in 2005. My guess is they will continue to try to keep it current. I feel the line has to be drawn somewhere, and the since the rifle doesn't shoot any higher than you aim it its eems like a good place to start.
ReplyDeleteYou spoke of this test as a standard for college faculty; what do you think the standards should be for K-12 teachers? Do they need to have lower standards or any at all?
ReplyDeleteNancy,
ReplyDeleteWell IC3 is a base standard for everyone. It is touted as what every person should know about technology. It meets NCLB requirements for students so my thinking was it should be the base standard for teachers also. My project here is geared towards community college faculty which is why I mention that.
